This assurance was conveyed during Rubio’s initial conversation with Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo, highlighting the robust nature of the U.S.-Philippine alliance, which is vital for maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Romualdez, currently attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, noted the timeliness of Rubio’s assurance, especially amidst escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea, exacerbated by the recent sighting of a large China Coast Guard vessel near Philippine waters. He emphasized the significance of the joint naval exercises conducted with the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, which underscore the importance of strategic defense collaboration.
Despite the ongoing tensions, Romualdez stressed the necessity of diplomacy as the primary approach to resolving disputes in the West Philippine Sea.
