House Speaker Martin Romualdez expressed his approval of the firm commitment from the newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who assured that the Trump administration would maintain its steadfast support for the Philippines. This assurance was conveyed during Rubio’s initial conversation with Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo, highlighting the robust nature of the U.S.-Philippine alliance, which is vital for maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Romualdez, currently attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, noted the timeliness of Rubio’s assurance, especially amidst escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea, exacerbated by the recent sighting of a large China Coast Guard vessel near Philippine waters. He emphasized the significance of the joint naval exercises conducted with the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, which underscore the importance of strategic defense collaboration.

Despite the ongoing tensions, Romualdez stressed the necessity of diplomacy as the primary approach to resolving disputes in the West Philippine Sea. He expressed optimism that President Donald Trump’s approach to engaging with nations traditionally at odds with the U.S. could pave the way for peaceful resolutions and mutual benefits.

While recognizing the importance of strong alliances, Romualdez reiterated the Philippines’ commitment to an independent foreign policy. He emphasized the need to protect national sovereignty and the welfare of the Filipino people, while also acknowledging the value of working with allies who respect international law and norms.

Romualdez advocated for inclusive discussions and adherence to the 2016 arbitral ruling as essential steps toward establishing lasting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. He also highlighted the crucial role of legislative collaboration in addressing common challenges between the Philippines and the United States, stating that the Philippine Congress is prepared to work closely with its U.S. counterparts to advance initiatives that benefit both nations and enhance regional stability.
