The deployment of the US-manufactured ‘Mid-Range Capability’ (MRC) Typhon Missile System in the Philippines underscores the enduring defense partnership between Manila and Washington, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla emphasized that the deployment aims to enhance the Philippine military’s preparedness, deepen its understanding of advanced weaponry, and contribute to regional stability. The move, however, drew criticism from China, which argued that it jeopardizes peace and security in the region. Padilla clarified that the deployment’s specifics, including its location, are the result of meticulous coordination between the Philippines and the US, reflecting their shared strategic interests and mutual consultations. Decisions regarding the duration and other aspects of the deployment are made in close collaboration with allies to meet both operational and security needs. The MRC was previously stationed in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, where it was used to train Philippine Army personnel. Padilla noted that the transfer of the MRC to a new, undisclosed location was kept secret to safeguard its security. She also responded to China’s objections by asserting the Philippines’ sovereign right to fortify its defenses as it sees fit, without external dictation.
