The deployment of the US-manufactured ‘Mid-Range Capability’ (MRC) Typhon Missile System in the Philippines underscores the enduring defense partnership between Manila and Washington, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla emphasized that the deployment aims to enhance the Philippine military’s readiness, deepen familiarity with advanced weaponry, and bolster regional security. China has voiced concerns over the deployment, claiming it jeopardizes regional peace. Padilla clarified that the deployment’s details, including the system’s positioning, are the result of close coordination between the Philippines and the US, reflecting shared operational strategies and mutual consultations. Decisions regarding the duration of the deployment and other related issues are made in collaboration with allies to meet both operational and security needs. The MRC was previously stationed in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, where it was used to train Philippine Army personnel. Padilla noted that the transfer of the MRC to an undisclosed location was kept secret to ensure security. She also responded to China’s criticism by asserting that no single country can dictate the Philippines’ defense strategies, emphasizing the sovereign right of nations to fortify their defenses.
