Philippine Speaker Reinforces Commitment to Sovereignty at World Economic Forum

At the World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos, Switzerland, Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez firmly reiterated the Philippines’ dedication to its territorial integrity. During a panel discussion titled ‘Navigating Asia’s Hotspots,’ Romualdez emphasized President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s resolute stance on protecting Philippine sovereignty, stating that not a single inch of territory would be relinquished.

Joined by notable figures such as Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta, Indonesia Foreign Minister Sugiono, and leaders from Zurich Insurance Group and the Council on Foreign Relations, Romualdez highlighted the Philippines’ strategic approach to the geopolitical tensions between the United States and China, particularly concerning the South China Sea. He stressed the importance of maintaining balanced relations with both nations, noting that the territorial disputes should not overshadow other aspects of the Philippines’ relationship with China, including trade and cultural exchanges.

Romualdez also acknowledged the strong alliance with the United States, mentioning recent affirmations from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the Mutual Defense Treaty and Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. He underscored the significance of these commitments in bolstering the Philippines’ ability to safeguard its sovereignty while fostering global collaboration.

On the economic front, Romualdez pointed out the attractiveness of the Philippines to investors, citing its robust GDP growth, youthful workforce, and strategic position within ASEAN. He emphasized the country’s potential and resilience, aiming to build stronger partnerships for trade and investment opportunities.

In terms of regional stability, Romualdez reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to ASEAN centrality and multilateralism, advocating for a balanced and pragmatic foreign policy that promotes peace, economic growth, and international cooperation.
