In a show of solidarity, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has committed to providing comprehensive support to soldiers injured during a confrontation with rogue elements in Basilan on January 22. AFP chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized the military’s unwavering support, stating, “The AFP stands firmly behind them, and we will ensure they receive all necessary resources for a complete recovery.” During a visit to the Western Mindanao Command headquarters in Zamboanga City, Brawner honored the courage of the 32nd Infantry Battalion’s wounded soldiers by presenting them with the Wounded Personnel Medal. He praised their bravery, noting, “Our soldiers are the backbone of our national defense, and the bravery shown by these individuals is a testament to their selflessness and sacrifice.” Brawner also acknowledged the soldiers’ dedication and service, reinforcing the AFP’s commitment to the normalization program in the Bangsamoro region, which aims to tackle the underlying causes of conflict while adhering to legal and peaceful frameworks. The clash, which occurred in Barangay Lower Cabengbeng, Sumisip, resulted in the death of two soldiers and injuries to twelve others. The soldiers were on a mission to secure United Nations Development Program (UNDP) personnel involved in a peace and development initiative in the area.
