MANILA – In a significant move to bolster the future of social welfare in the Philippines, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting social work students. This commitment was highlighted by DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian during the ‘Dialogue with Social Work Students’ event, which took place both virtually and in-person at the University of Cebu-Banilad Campus in Cebu City on January 24, 2025.

Addressing the students, Secretary Gatchalian emphasized their crucial role as the future of the social work profession. ‘You are the hope and future of our profession. And everyone from the DSWD is here to support you every step of the way,’ he stated in his video message. The event, themed ‘Bridging the Gap between Theory and Practice,’ saw participation from social work students across 11 universities in Central Visayas.

This dialogue marks the beginning of a series planned throughout the year, aimed at enhancing and promoting the social work profession nationwide. Secretary Gatchalian highlighted the event’s role in uplifting the spirits of future social workers and assured them of the DSWD’s full support in their educational and professional development.

The dialogue also introduced the upcoming launch of the revamped DSWD Academy, which aims to offer globally competitive training by utilizing both international and local resources on social welfare, development, and social protection.

Encouraging the students, Gatchalian stressed the impact of their efforts, saying, ‘Remember that every effort that you put into your studies, every skill you hone and every value you uphold will shape the lives of countless individuals and communities. Never underestimate the power of your compassion, empathy and dedication to create positive change.’

He urged the students to complete their education, secure their licenses, and dedicate themselves to serving the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized sectors of society. ‘The road ahead may not always be easy but it is one filled with purpose and fulfillment. You are not just preparing for a profession, you’re preparing to make a difference in the lives of so many Filipinos,’ Gatchalian concluded.
