MANILA – On the occasion of the International Day of Education, the Department of Education (DepEd) held a significant event at its Central Office in Pasig City, focusing on the ethical application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the educational sector. The theme for this year’s celebration, ‘AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,’ underscored the importance of maintaining human control amidst technological advancements.
The event, which took place on January 24, 2025, saw participation from various stakeholders, including students and representatives from international organizations such as UNESCO, SEAMEO INNOTECH, and UNICEF Philippines. The gathering aimed to discuss and promote the responsible use of AI in enhancing educational experiences.
DepEd’s commitment to this cause was evident as they highlighted their collaboration with Khan Academy’s Khanmigo, an AI-driven educational tool designed to tackle learning challenges and elevate the educational landscape in the Philippines.
Undersecretary and chief of staff lawyer Fatima Lipp Panontongan emphasized the role of AI as a tool for empowerment rather than a replacement for human effort. ‘Together, let us create a future where technology amplifies human potential rather than diminishes it,’ she stated, reinforcing the department’s vision aligned with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s goal to harness Filipino potential.
The celebration also featured exhibits from EdTech partners like FELTA, CISTEM, STI, Samsung, Unilab, and iAcademy, showcasing innovative solutions in AI and education. Panontongan stressed the importance of preparing future generations, stating, ‘It is our duty to ensure that the next generation — Gen Z, Alpha, Beta, and beyond — is nurtured, informed, and inspired.’
The International Day of Education, observed annually on January 24, aims to promote educational access for all and encourage initiatives that enhance youth engagement in learning.
