Cebu Subway Project in the Works to Ease Traffic Congestion

·

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is actively considering the development of a subway system in Cebu to combat the province’s traffic issues. DOTr Undersecretary for Planning and Project Development, Timothy John Batan, revealed in a recent Radyo Pilipinas interview that discussions about the subway began with Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia in 2024. The subway is a key component of the DOTr’s comprehensive plan to alleviate road congestion in Cebu through enhanced public transportation. Batan emphasized that the project will undergo a thorough feasibility study and stressed the importance of involving the Cebu provincial government to tailor the subway to the community’s needs. He noted that the narrow roads in Cebu make an elevated rail system impractical, thus favoring the subway option. According to Batan, constructing an elevated rail would be challenging due to the complex alignment it would require. The proposed subway will span from Danao City to Carcar City, covering a distance of 50 to 65 kilometers. The ongoing feasibility study is assessing the potential passenger capacity of the subway.
