Philippine Military Investigates Espionage Activities of Arrested Chinese National and Accomplices

·

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced on Wednesday that they are delving deeper into the espionage activities of a Chinese national and his two Filipino accomplices, who were apprehended in Makati City. AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla emphasized the need to understand the broader context of these activities, stating, ‘We want to take a step back, take a look at the bigger picture, and try to connect the dots. What are the activities that took place?’ The arrested Chinese national was found engaging in unauthorized surveillance and reconnaissance of both civilian and military infrastructures. The AFP, in collaboration with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), is now analyzing the motives behind these actions. Padilla mentioned that they are examining the equipment seized from the suspects to uncover the possible objectives of their operations. The AFP and NBI have successfully countered the unauthorized activities of the Chinese national, who had been mapping critical infrastructures across Luzon for over a month. This individual, married to a Filipina and residing in the Philippines for over a decade, has established businesses that serve as fronts for receiving funds to support his illicit activities. These businesses are supported by a network of Chinese financiers and technical experts. The AFP, NBI, and other security agencies are continuing their investigations to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and national security.
