New Bill Proposes Firing Squad Execution for Corrupt Government Officials

·

In a bold move to curb corruption, Zamboanga del Norte Representative Khymer Adan Olaso has introduced House Bill 11211, dubbed the Death Penalty for Corruption Act, to the Philippine House of Representatives. The proposed legislation aims to enforce the death penalty by firing squad for government officials found guilty of corruption, misappropriation of public funds, and plunder. Olaso argues that existing anti-corruption laws have failed to effectively deter such crimes, which he considers a severe threat to national development. The bill targets a wide range of public servants, from the highest office of the president down to local barangay officials, including members of the military and police. It specifically addresses offenses outlined in the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, the Revised Penal Code, and the Plunder Law. Olaso emphasizes that the bill is designed to restore public trust, enhance accountability, and serve as a deterrent against corruption. The proposed law includes provisions for due process, requiring Supreme Court affirmation of convictions, automatic reviews, and the exhaustion of all legal remedies before any execution. Olaso believes this measure will not only punish offenders but also symbolize the Philippines’ staunch stance against corruption, reinforcing the message that integrity and accountability are non-negotiable in public service.
