In a recent statement, Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez highlighted the Marcos administration’s dedication to human rights, describing it as a lasting legacy. Speaking on the Bagong Pilipinas news program, Vasquez emphasized that the current government adheres strictly to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and has extended this commitment across all government agencies. He stated, ‘Our government now follows all human rights policies set by the United Nations, which is crucial not only for the DOJ but for all government agencies under our whole-of-government approach.’ The Philippines has also successfully transitioned out of the UN Joint Program, becoming the only country to do so in 2024, indicating a strong national ownership of human rights initiatives. Vasquez also pointed out the establishment of a special committee on human rights coordination, which ensures that all agencies work together to protect citizens’ rights. Additionally, the Marcos administration has seen a significant increase in conviction rates, rising from an average of 26 percent to 78 percent, thanks to improved case building and higher proof standards. Vasquez stressed that these efforts are aimed at eliminating frivolous litigation and ensuring justice is served fairly, regardless of an individual’s social or financial status. He concluded by affirming that the focus remains on evidence, not personalities, to pursue true criminals and protect the innocent from unnecessary legal battles.
