Manila is gearing up for a vibrant celebration of Chinese New Year, starting this Friday. The festivities will commence with a Prosperity Tree Lighting ceremony at Plaza San Lorenzo in Binondo, the site of the world’s oldest Chinatown. Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna shared that the event is set to kick off the annual celebration, highlighting the city’s rich cultural tapestry.

The Prosperity Tree, also referred to as the Money Tree, will be illuminated at 5 p.m., with city officials and members of various Chinese-Filipino organizations in attendance. The event is being organized in collaboration with the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) and the Manila Chinatown Barangay Organization (MCBO), led by chairman Jeff Lau.

Leading up to the Chinese New Year on January 29, a countdown event is scheduled for January 28 at 11 p.m. on Jones Bridge. The celebrations will culminate in a Grand Parade on January 29, starting at 2 p.m. from the old Post Office site and winding through the Chinatown area in Binondo.

Mayor Lacuna has extended an invitation to the public to join in the five-day festivities. Manila’s Chinatown, with its 430-year history, remains a top attraction for both local and international tourists, offering a unique cultural experience that is a must-visit during a trip to the capital city.
