The House of Representatives has vowed unwavering support for the residents of Pag-asa Island, Palawan, aiming to uplift their living conditions and tackle the unique challenges they face in this remote and disputed territory. On January 16, 2025, during a visit led by House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairperson Rachel Arenas and 1Rider Representative Rodrigo ‘Rodge’ Gutierrez, Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez’s message was delivered, emphasizing Congress’s dedication to improving the island’s welfare.

Romualdez acknowledged the difficulties of island life, including isolation from major cities, inadequate facilities, and the struggle to meet daily needs, yet praised the resilience of the island’s inhabitants. Pag-asa Island, part of the Kalayaan Island Group in the Spratly Islands, is crucial for asserting Philippine sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea and is home to 79 families.

The delegation distributed food and grocery packages to all 230 residents, including military and uniformed personnel, and assessed the community’s urgent needs in health care, infrastructure, and livelihood. Romualdez stressed the government’s resolve to provide sustainable solutions, supported by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., with ongoing projects like the establishment of a rural health unit and new facilities.

He assured the residents that their voices are heard in Congress and their needs are being championed, particularly through the rural health unit initiative, which is vital for accessible health care. Romualdez also highlighted the island’s role not only as a territorial asset but as a home to Filipinos on the frontlines of national sovereignty, saluting their dedication and sacrifice.
