The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has inaugurated two new public utility vehicle (PUV) stops at Bonifacio Shrine in Manila, aiming to enhance accessibility and safety for commuters. The unveiling took place on January 22, 2025, marking a significant step towards modernizing public transportation in the city.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure, Jesus Ferdinand Ortega, highlighted the stops as a testament to the department’s commitment to a modern, inclusive, and sustainable transport system. Ortega emphasized that the project aligns with the broader objective of improving public transport safety, accessibility, and efficiency for all Filipinos.
The newly introduced PUV stops are equipped with advanced features such as CCTV surveillance, well-lit environments, and concrete bollards for added security. Additionally, the stops include designated seating areas for individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, and senior citizens, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity.
In a move to promote eco-friendly transportation, the stops also feature bike racks, a bike shed, and a repair station, encouraging the use of bicycles as an alternative mode of transport. Ortega noted that this initiative not only aims to reduce pollution but also to enhance public health.
Manila City Mayor Honey Lacuna expressed gratitude towards the DOTr for their efforts in improving the lives of Manileños through this project. She expressed hope for continued collaboration between national and local governments to bring more beneficial projects to the public.
