In Malasiqui, Pangasinan, a significant flood mitigation effort is underway along the Balincaguing River in Burgos town. The PHP96.5-million riverbank protection project, specifically in Segment A of Barangay Anapao, is on track to be finalized by the third quarter of 2025. The initiative, which began construction on November 27, 2024, is part of the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) broader Flood Management Program in the Ilocos Region.
Esperanza Tinaza, the DPWH’s information officer for the region, highlighted the project’s focus on building structures to mitigate flooding and enhance the drainage system. These efforts are crucial for managing floodwaters effectively and protecting the local community from the adverse effects of flooding, including erosion. The project’s design also takes into account the potential impacts of the La Niña weather phenomenon.
The construction involves several key components, including slope protection, the installation of steel sheet piles, and drainage improvements. Funded under the Regular Infrastructure budget, this project not only aims to reduce flood risks but also to bolster disaster preparedness in the area.
Tinaza emphasized that the initiative is a testament to DPWH’s dedication to enhancing flood risk management. Additionally, it seeks to educate the public on flood mitigation strategies and promote sustainable land-use practices in regions prone to flooding.
