A new seaweed laboratory at the Bantayan Island Multi-Species Marine Hatchery is poised to enhance the production of algae, which serves as a crucial raw material for various products. This initiative was announced by Bantayan town Mayor Arthur Despi, who expressed gratitude towards the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Central Visayas for allocating PHP15 million to fund the project this year. The laboratory aims to distribute high-quality seaweed propagules, maintain seaweed tissue cultures, and conduct research and development to support the seaweed industry. Mayor Despi highlighted that the lab will aid local seaweed farmers in cultivating and expanding the variety of ‘guso’ (algae) that can be grown and harvested in the waters surrounding Bantayan. According to BFAR-7, Bantayan is a significant hub for ‘guso’ farmers in the Philippines. Beyond boosting the livelihoods of local fisherfolk, the project is also expected to draw tourists to Bantayan Island.
