Canlaon City Launches ‘Cash-for-Work’ Initiative for Residents Displaced by Mount Kanlaon Eruption

In response to the upheaval caused by the eruption of Mount Kanlaon on December 9, Canlaon City in Negros Oriental is rolling out a ‘Cash-for-Work’ program aimed at supporting its displaced residents. Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas, who has been at the forefront of the city’s recovery efforts, emphasized the profound impact of the evacuation on the community. ‘The displacement isn’t just about leaving homes behind; it’s about the loss of jobs, daily routines, and a sense of normalcy,’ Cardenas stated during a recent press conference.

The initiative, which is set to commence in February, will offer employment opportunities to those affected, prioritizing individuals currently residing in evacuation centers or with family members. According to Edna Masicampo, the city’s information officer-designate, the exact number of participants will be finalized once the local government completes its assessment of those in need.

As of January 17, the city reported that 1,299 families, totaling 4,186 individuals, were housed in eight evacuation centers, while another 728 families, comprising 2,287 people, were staying with relatives. The ‘Cash-for-Work’ program is designed not only to provide immediate financial relief but also to empower residents by fostering a sense of dignity and self-reliance during these challenging times.

Mayor Cardenas has called upon government agencies and officials to rally behind the initiative, stressing the importance of community solidarity. ‘In these trying times, it’s crucial that we look out for one another,’ he remarked, extending a message of solidarity and commitment to the affected residents. ‘I am here to support you, and together, we will overcome this crisis.’
