In a recent statement, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. hinted at the possibility of extending the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil, emphasizing the need for stability as the 2025 midterm elections approach. Speaking to the media in Taguig City, Marcos highlighted the potential disruption that a change in leadership could cause during the election period. He noted, ‘There is a compelling case for maintaining the current leadership to ensure stability, especially during the campaign and election times. We are considering this seriously, and it seems likely that we will keep him in his position at least until after the elections.’ Gen. Marbil, who assumed the role of PNP chief on April 1, 2024, is set to retire on February 7, 2025, when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56.
