5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Occidental Mindoro, No Damage Reported

On Monday evening, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake shook Occidental Mindoro, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The earthquake, which occurred at 6:42 p.m., was centered 23 kilometers northeast of Lubang and had a depth of 116 kilometers. The tremor was classified as tectonic in nature.

In Lubang, the quake was felt at Intensity IV, described as moderately strong. Weaker sensations, classified as Intensity III, were experienced in several Metro Manila cities including Quezon City, Makati City, and Taguig City, as well as in Obando, Bulacan; Hermosa, Bataan; Cainta, Rizal; and Cabuyao City, Laguna. Intensity II, or slightly felt, was reported in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Cuenca and Talisay, Batangas; and in Tagaytay City and Bacoor, Cavite. The least perceptible shaking, Intensity I, was noted in Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila.

Phivolcs also recorded instrumental intensities, with Intensity III in Tagaytay City, Cavite, and in Calapan and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro. Intensity II was measured in Navotas City; Pandi and San Rafael, Bulacan; Bauan, Talisay, and Tanauan City, Batangas; Naic, Ternate, and Trece Martires City, Cavite; Calamba City, Laguna; and in Abra De Ilog, Magsaysay, and Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro. Intensity I was recorded in Malabon City; Bulakan, Bustos, and Paombong, Bulacan; Rosario, Batangas; San Pablo City, Laguna; Dolores, Gumaca, and Mauban, Quezon; and Tanay, Rizal.

Reported intensity refers to the traditional method of assessing earthquake intensity based on human reports, whereas instrumental intensity is determined using devices that measure ground acceleration. Phivolcs stated that while no damage is anticipated from this event, aftershocks could occur.
