In a move to elevate scientific literacy across the education sector, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) have formalized a partnership. On January 17, 2025, at the DepEd’s main office in Pasig City, Education Secretary Sonny Angara and DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. inked a four-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at enriching the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum.
The agreement outlines a comprehensive approach to improve STEM education, including curriculum development, teacher training, scholarships, mentoring, and enhanced information sharing and research initiatives. Secretary Angara emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating it as a crucial step towards revamping the science and technology curriculum, boosting student engagement, and fortifying school networks and research resources.
As part of the partnership, DOST will send scientists and researchers to schools to serve as direct resources for students and teachers. Additionally, DOST will support DepEd by providing teaching tools, platforms, and access to its facilities, ensuring educators are equipped with the most current STEM methodologies and information. DepEd, in turn, will select the schools to participate and align the partnership with its educational policies and standards.
