Smart Communications Alerts Subscribers to Beware of Phishing Scams Involving Reward Points

·

Smart Communications Inc. has issued a stern warning to its subscribers about a phishing scam that uses the lure of ‘Smart points’ to trick users into clicking malicious links. Roy Ibay, Smart’s vice president and head of regulatory affairs, explained that these fraudulent messages are often sent via fake cellular towers, making them appear as if they come from legitimate sources like mobile carriers. The scam promises rewards that must be redeemed before they expire, urging users to click on a provided link.

Ibay emphasized that Smart never sends clickable links in any of its communications to customers. He confirmed that the phishing site associated with the ‘Smart points’ scam has been blocked and clarified that no such promotion exists. He also directed customers to the official Smart domain, smart.com.ph, for legitimate interactions.

Additionally, Ibay highlighted a separate issue of mass account hijacking on a widely used instant messaging platform. He advised users to verify any suspicious links received through this platform with their contacts, as these links often lead to fake login pages designed to steal personal credentials.

In response to these threats, Smart has enhanced its network firewall to better filter out unsolicited and fraudulent texts. In 2024 alone, the company blocked over 2.3 billion malicious text messages and deactivated more than 1 million mobile numbers involved in suspicious activities.

To protect themselves, Ibay urged mobile users not to respond to unverified messages, to block or delete suspicious texts containing links, and to avoid clicking on any links received via text. He also warned against falling for overly attractive offers, such as winning prizes in raffles one never entered, or requests for personal information or payments to claim rewards.

Smart encourages its customers to report any suspicious messages through its HuliScam portal at smart.com.ph/HuliScam. Users can submit details like the sender’s number, message content, date received, and recipient’s location, leading to swift action against fraudulent SIM numbers.
