President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed his desire to bolster the bilateral relationship between the Philippines and India during a meeting with Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita at Malacañan Palace in Manila on Tuesday. Marcos highlighted the significance of enhancing ties amidst the evolving geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific region.

Margherita’s visit to Manila marks a significant milestone as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of this year, celebrating the long-standing connection between India and the Philippines. Margherita also expressed India’s affection and respect for the Philippines.

The visit follows the third summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation, which was chaired by Indonesian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2023. During his stay, Margherita plans to honor Mahatma Gandhi by laying floral tributes at his bust located at Miriam College in Manila. Additionally, he will engage with the Indian community residing in the Philippines.

This visit underscores India’s commitment to maintaining robust ties with the Philippines, aligning with India’s Act East Policy and its vision for the Indo-Pacific region. The diplomatic relations between the Philippines and India were officially established on November 26, 1949, following the independence of both countries in 1946 and 1947, respectively.
