Philippine Army Discovers NPA Weapons Stash in Leyte Highlands

·

In a significant development over the weekend, the Philippine Army uncovered a hidden arsenal of the New People’s Army (NPA) in the remote village of Mahilum, located in the mountainous region of Hindang, Leyte. The cache included a formidable M60 machine gun, along with an M16 and an M14 rifle, signaling a major blow to the NPA’s dwindling forces in the area.

Brig. Gen. Noel Vestuir, who leads the 802nd Infantry Brigade, highlighted that the successful operation stemmed from ongoing dialogues and consultations with former NPA rebels. These discussions have been crucial in tracking down the remnants of the NPA’s Island Committee Levox, which continues to operate in Leyte’s rugged terrain.

According to Vestuir, the former rebels have been instrumental in identifying current contacts and hideouts of the remaining NPA members. He emphasized the importance of their cooperation, stating that their deep understanding of the local terrain and social dynamics is invaluable in persuading other rebels to reintegrate into society.

The Army commander praised the troops for building trust and collaboration not only with former rebels but also with local government units and the community at large. This partnership is seen as a cornerstone in the broader effort to achieve lasting peace and development in the region.

As the new year 2025 begins, Vestuir expressed optimism about the positive momentum, reaffirming the military’s commitment to peace and development. He also extended a renewed call to the remaining NPA members to lay down their arms and embrace the opportunities offered by the government for a peaceful life.
