Election Candidates Urged to Keep Politics Out of Iglesia Ni Cristo Peace Rally

·

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has issued a reminder to candidates in the upcoming May 12, 2025 national and local elections to refrain from politicizing the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s (INC) peace rally in Manila. Comelec Chair George Garcia emphasized the importance of respecting the religious nature of the event, urging candidates to avoid using it for political gain. He stated, “This is a gathering for faith and unity. We stand with INC in this noble cause. It should not be exploited for personal benefit. Avoid being ‘epalitiko’.” The term ‘epalitiko’ is a blend of the Filipino words ‘epal’ (attention seeker) and ‘politiko’ (politician), used to describe politicians who seek undue attention.

The INC organized the National Rally for Peace across the nation to promote solidarity amidst political tensions involving top government officials. In Manila, the event is taking place at Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, with over a million INC members reported to be present by 11 a.m. The official program is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Despite the start of the election period on Sunday, candidates are prohibited from campaigning at the rally. The campaign period for national candidates is set from February 11 to May 10, while local candidates can campaign from March 28 to May 10.

Senator Francis Tolentino expressed his support for the rally, highlighting the importance of the call for peace and unity, especially at the beginning of 2025. He noted that the theme of unity is relevant to homes, communities, local government units, and the entire nation. Senator Imee Marcos also supported the event, stating that it aligns with the constitutional right to free speech and does not violate the separation of church and state. She emphasized that the rally is a lawful expression of the participants’ rights, underscoring the significance of protecting freedom of expression in a democratic society.
