The Department of Justice (DOJ) is currently examining the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) report concerning Vice President Sara Duterte’s alleged threat to assassinate President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. During a press briefing at the Palace, Prosecutor General Richard Fadullon explained that the DOJ is scrutinizing the evidence collected by the NBI to determine if further investigation is warranted. Fadullon mentioned that the DOJ’s recommendations would depend on the findings, potentially leading to a formal filing or returning the case to the NBI for additional evidence gathering. He emphasized the close collaboration between the NBI and DOJ in evaluating the available evidence. Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez noted that should the review find adequate grounds, a preliminary investigation would ensue. The controversy stems from an online briefing last November where Duterte claimed she had arranged for an assassin to target President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez in retaliation for an alleged plot against her life.
