Comelec Expresses Frustration Over Gun Ban Violations as Election Period Begins

·

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has voiced its disappointment regarding the number of individuals flouting the gun ban as the election period for the upcoming May 12 polls commenced. On Monday, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia announced that since the election period and gun ban started on January 12, 2025, there have been 80 recorded violations. Garcia lamented the stubbornness of many, who continue to carry firearms outside their homes despite the suspension of their licenses and extensive public awareness campaigns. He emphasized the persistence of these violations, stating, “Many are really being stubborn… They continue to choose to violate the law.” The Comelec’s Gun Ban and Security Concerns Committee noted that 1,131 individuals have been granted exemptions from the election gun ban, and applications for exemptions are still being accepted by the poll body. The election period is set to continue until June 11, 2025. Garcia warned that those caught carrying firearms without Comelec exemptions could face charges for both an election offense and a violation of firearms laws. He reminded the public that carrying, bearing, or transporting firearms or other deadly weapons during the election period is illegal without written authorization from the Comelec. Additionally, Garcia appealed for public patience with the nationwide checkpoints, acknowledging potential delays but stressing their importance for safety. There are currently 1,411 checkpoint areas established across the country in preparation for the May national and local elections.
