The Biliran Bridge, a crucial link between Biliran province and Leyte mainland, is in dire need of repairs, with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Biliran eagerly awaiting a PHP30-million budget allocation from the central office. The bridge, which has been showing signs of wear and structural issues, is essential for residents traveling between the two regions.
Irwin Antonio, the head of DPWH-Biliran, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the bridge’s condition requires immediate attention. He hopes the funds will be released by the end of the month to initiate the procurement process and subsequent repairs. A recent assessment on December 24, 2024, revealed significant damage to the bridge’s structural components, including stringers, steel cross bracing, and other parts, primarily due to corrosion and the constant exposure to seawater and traffic.
As a temporary measure, the bridge has been restricted to light vehicles only, with heavy vehicles rerouted to use a barge for crossing. This decision came after a video of the bridge swaying went viral, highlighting the severity of the issue.
Efforts to secure the necessary funding are being spearheaded by Biliran’s lone district Representative Gerardo Espina, Jr., in collaboration with the DPWH regional and central offices. Espina has been actively advocating for the swift release of the budget, ensuring the public that he will continue to push for the necessary resources and actions to address the bridge’s condition.
Constructed in 1976, the Biliran Bridge remains the sole land connection for travel between Biliran and Leyte. Antonio assured that the bridge would not need to be closed during repairs, as the issues are located at the deck level or below. Since December 23, only light vehicles such as passenger vans and SUVs have been permitted to cross, while heavy vehicles, including those transporting essential goods, have been barred.
