Trilateral Leaders’ Call Rescheduled to Monday Due to Wildfires

·

The scheduled trilateral phone conversation involving President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., outgoing US President Joe Biden, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has been rescheduled to Monday morning, Manila time. Originally planned for Sunday, the delay was announced by Malacañang and attributed to the wildfires currently raging in Los Angeles. According to Presidential Communications Secretary Cesar Chavez, the adjustment was necessary due to these unforeseen circumstances. The Department of Foreign Affairs has indicated that the focus of the meeting will be on the ongoing developments in trilateral cooperation among the three nations. Last year, the leaders convened in Washington for a historic trilateral summit, where they delved into topics such as security collaboration, infrastructure projects, and strategies for enhancing regional economic resilience. Additionally, in December, the three countries participated in a joint maritime exercise aimed at reinforcing their commitment to the protection of international waters and promoting free navigation in the Indo-Pacific region, amidst escalating tensions in the South China Sea.
