Bureau of Immigration Thwarts Scam Attempt, Captures US Fugitive

In a significant operation at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) intercepted a 35-year-old Filipino man attempting to travel to Cambodia under dubious conditions. The individual, who initially stated he was en route to Hanoi, Vietnam, on a Cebu Pacific flight, was flagged due to his inconsistent statements during initial questioning. Mary Jane Hizon, head of the BI’s Immigration Protection and Border Enforcement Section, explained that the man’s claim of a spontaneous trip led to further scrutiny. Subsequent interrogation revealed he was actually heading to Cambodia after being recruited via Facebook for a supposed job at a business process outsourcing (BPO) company, with further instructions provided through Telegram. The BI noted that such BPOs are frequently used by syndicates as covers for various scams, including online fraud and catfishing. In a separate incident, BI agents in Nueva Ecija apprehended 67-year-old American Michael Lewis Ginsberg, who is wanted in the United States for sexual assault and is currently facing deportation proceedings for overstaying his visa.
