In a recent crackdown, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) apprehended a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) suspected of operating an illicit gunsmithing business in Zamboanga del Sur. The arrest was executed in the late afternoon on Thursday in Barangay Tiguian, Margosatubig, following a search warrant issued by the Pagadian City Regional Trial Court. The suspect, identified as Jaime, who serves with Delta Company of the 53rd Infantry Battalion, was caught red-handed. Authorities confiscated a haul that included five .45 caliber pistols, two M16 rifle lower receivers, an improvised firearm, various ammunition, firearm magazines, accessories, and an array of gunsmithing tools such as a welding machine and a bench grinder. Jaime, who had a prior arrest in December 2020 for unauthorized firearm sales and was released on bail, allegedly ran a clandestine gun shop from his home, providing firearm repair and customization services to a clientele that included politicians and civilians. He now faces charges under Republic Act 10591, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
