The Philippine Coast Guard’s vessel, BRP Teresa Magbanua, continues its vigilant watch off the coast of Zambales to counter the unauthorized activities of a China Coast Guard (CCG) ship. According to Commodore Jay Tarriela, the spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, the CCG vessel numbered ‘3304’ has been illegally navigating 70 to 80 nautical miles from Zambales. The steadfast presence of the BRP Teresa Magbanua aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s strategy to prevent the normalization of the CCG’s unlawful actions, which could lead to claims of sovereignty over Philippine waters. Tarriela emphasized that the ship’s ongoing surveillance is crucial in ensuring that Filipino fishermen can operate freely without fear of harassment or intimidation. The deployment of the PCG’s vessel also demonstrates a commitment to monitoring and maintaining a visible presence to discourage illegal activities by the Chinese Coast Guard, all while adhering to principles of restraint and non-provocation. Earlier in the week, the PCG observed another CCG vessel, ‘3103’, moving towards Zambales to take over from the ‘monster ship’ CCG-5901, which had intruded into Philippine waters for five days. Subsequently, vessel ‘3304’ replaced ‘3103’ in the area.
