In a bid to recognize excellence in agriculture, Cebu City has launched a search for its ‘Ten Outstanding Farmers.’ Councilor Pastor Alcover Jr., who leads the city’s agriculture committee, announced that 20 farmers are currently under evaluation for this prestigious award. The assessment is being conducted by experts from the Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas and the City Agriculture Department.
The initiative aims to spotlight farmers who have successfully incorporated modern technology into their farming practices to boost productivity. Alcover emphasized the need for modernization in agriculture, stating, ‘We must move away from traditional farming methods. No more using bolos and pickaxes to till the land.’
The criteria for selection include not only the use of technology but also sustainable farming practices, the impact on the community, and the ability to generate a steady income for their families. These aspects are intended to serve as a model for other farmers in the region.
Arlie Gesta, the officer-in-charge at the City Agriculture Department, added that the nominees are also evaluated on their innovative approaches and their willingness to share knowledge with fellow farmers.
Nominations for the award came from 28 mountainous barangays, covering a range of agricultural activities such as vegetable farming, livestock rearing, corn farming, flower cultivation, mango farming, and ornamental plant growing.
