New Floodwall Enhances Safety for Samar Town Residents

·

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has recently finalized a flood control project along the Gandara River in Barangay Minda, Gandara town, Samar province. This initiative aims to shield the local community from the devastating impacts of floods. The project, a 200-meter long and three-meter high floodwall, also features a pedestrian pathway with guardrails to enhance safety for walkers. The construction, costing PHP40.5 million, was carried out by the DPWH Samar 1st District Engineering Office and funded through the 2024 General Appropriations Act. Since its completion in November 2024, the residents of Barangay Minda have shown appreciation for the DPWH’s efforts in prioritizing their safety. This infrastructure is crucial for protecting the community, which primarily depends on fishing and agriculture, from natural disasters. Previously, the area was prone to severe flooding during heavy rains due to river overflow.
