Marcos, Biden, and Ishiba to Hold Trilateral Call on January 12

·

The Philippine presidential palace in Manila has confirmed a forthcoming virtual meeting involving President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden, and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Scheduled for January 12, this trilateral phone call was announced by Cesar Chavez, the Secretary of the Presidential Communications Office. Details regarding the agenda of the meeting remain undisclosed at this time. This upcoming call follows a previous trilateral summit in Washington, where the leaders from the Philippines, the U.S., and Japan tackled topics such as security collaboration, infrastructure projects, and economic resilience in the region. Additionally, the three nations participated in a joint maritime exercise last December, aimed at reinforcing their commitment to the security of international waters and promoting free navigation in the Indo-Pacific amid escalating tensions in the South China Sea. According to Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza, the leaders will review the advancements made in trilateral cooperation since their significant meeting in April of the previous year. They are also set to address economic issues and discuss developments on both regional and global scales.
