In a move to cultivate a thriving startup scene, the Iloilo Provincial Board has kicked off the year with the approval of a groundbreaking ordinance. This legislative action, taken during their session on January 7, 2025, is designed to nurture the growth of entrepreneurial ventures within the province. Board Member Jason Gonzales, the ordinance’s proponent, emphasized the initiative’s aim to create a supportive environment for startups to flourish. The ordinance, officially known as Provincial Ordinance No. 2025-332, titled ‘An Ordinance Institutionalizing the Community and Academe-Based Startup Development in Iloilo Province and Providing Funds Therefor,’ sets aside an annual budget of PHP5 million to offer financial and technical assistance to startups. Each startup can apply for a grant of up to PHP500,000. Gonzales highlighted plans to collaborate with technology business incubators in both public and private educational institutions. A Startup Development Committee, led by the governor and including members from the business and private sectors, will be established to oversee the ordinance’s implementation. This committee is tasked with drafting the implementing rules and regulations by the end of the first quarter of 2025 and establishing a competitive application process for startups. Gonzales stressed the importance of bringing innovative startups to the market, particularly those with promising technologies, products, or services. He also pointed out the economic advantages of attracting entrepreneurs to Iloilo, noting the global impact of startups on economic growth. The ordinance showcases Iloilo’s dedication to fostering innovation in various fields, including technology, agriculture, and biotechnology. Gonzales remarked on the role of young entrepreneurs in using technology to address both new and longstanding challenges. This initiative positions Iloilo as an emerging hub for innovation and entrepreneurship in the region.
