In a significant move to ensure safety and security during the upcoming election period, the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office, led by Police Col. Frederick Obar, has successfully collected 330 firearms from various towns and cities within the province. The collection took place at Camp Valentin S. Juan in Laoag City on January 9, 2025, just days before the election gun ban was set to begin on January 12.
Of the firearms turned in, 255 were from owners with expired licenses who voluntarily surrendered their weapons at local police stations. Additionally, 75 firearms, previously confiscated, surrendered, or recovered, were handed over to the Provincial Supply and Accountable Office for secure storage. The collected firearms ranged from shotguns and revolvers to high-powered assault weapons, including various calibers and ammunition.
During the turnover ceremony, Col. Obar emphasized the police’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in Ilocos Norte. He highlighted that this initiative is a crucial part of the broader anti-criminality campaign and a preparatory step towards ensuring peaceful and orderly elections. The event was attended by representatives from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Bureau of Fire Protection.
Joel Gines, the provincial Comelec officer, praised the Philippine National Police and the community for their proactive efforts in fostering a secure environment ahead of the elections.
