Senator Loren Legarda has called for a comprehensive support system for the 220 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) recently pardoned by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Speaking on January 8, 2024, Legarda emphasized the importance of reintegration programs to help these workers rebuild their lives upon returning to the Philippines. She highlighted the necessity of skills and livelihood training, pointing to programs offered by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as vital resources. Legarda specifically mentioned the DOLE Kabuhayan and TESDA’s skill enhancement programs as beneficial for those looking to start anew. Additionally, she stressed the importance of supporting the families of these workers, suggesting the establishment of scholarship programs for their children to alleviate financial pressures. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has committed to facilitating the return of these OFWs and their reintegration into society through the Bagong Pilipinas initiative, a collaborative government effort. The Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi are working to expedite the necessary documentation to ensure a swift repatriation process.
