The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is in mourning following the tragic death of Airman First Class Mervin Guarte, a celebrated national athlete who was fatally stabbed in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when Guarte, a Southeast Asian Games multi-medalist, was attacked inside a village councilor’s home in Sitio Pinagkaisahan, Barangay Camilmil.
PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo expressed the organization’s deep sorrow and committed to providing full support and assistance to Guarte’s family. She also confirmed that the PAF is actively cooperating with the Calapan City Police in their investigation into the stabbing.
Guarte, who joined the PAF in 2015 through direct enlistment, was remembered by Castillo as a model serviceman and athlete whose dedication and excellence brought honor to both the country and the PAF in various competitions.
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has urged law enforcement to expedite their investigation into Guarte’s murder and ensure the perpetrator faces justice. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to combat violence and build a safer society, highlighting the significant impact of Guarte’s death on his family, the sports community, and the PAF.
Cayetano also called on the public to honor Guarte’s memory by celebrating his achievements and demanding accountability for his death, hoping his legacy would inspire future generations.
Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino lamented the loss of Guarte, a champion in obstacle sports racing, and urged for a swift resolution to the crime, emphasizing the void left in Philippine sports.
