The Marcos administration has set its sights on the rehabilitation of EDSA, Metro Manila’s main artery, as a key project for 2025, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan emphasized the need to enhance the road’s condition, stating that the project aims to improve the overall riding experience on EDSA. He highlighted the urgency of the rehabilitation, noting that the current state of the road makes it challenging for commuters to even send text messages while traveling.
Bonoan also discussed the administration’s approach to tackling flood issues across the country, following directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to adopt a comprehensive strategy for flood control. This includes the construction of three dams in the Sierra Madre mountains to manage floodwater and protect Metro Manila from flash floods. Additionally, the DPWH is focusing on the Pasig-Marikina Flood Control Program and the rehabilitation of 37 regional pumping stations, with 15 already completed and the rest expected to be finished within the year.
Reflecting on the DPWH’s achievements in 2024, Bonoan reported the completion of approximately 21,000 projects valued at PHP900 billion, which included road rehabilitation, flood control, and other local initiatives. Notable among these are the Integrated Risk Reduction Flood Control Management in Pampanga and a flood control project in Cagayan de Oro, both of which have been completed and are now protecting previously flood-prone areas.
