Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has urged for ongoing efforts to eliminate the remnants of Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) following a significant operation in Bagac, Bataan, where 900 alleged POGO workers were rescued. The senator’s call comes in the wake of the December 31, 2024, deadline for POGO operations to cease, emphasizing the need to dismantle criminal networks that have evolved from these gaming entities.
Gatchalian highlighted the transformation of POGOs into various business fronts such as BPO companies, resorts, and restaurants, which serve as covers for their illegal operations. He stressed the importance of vigilance from law enforcement, local governments, and the public to identify and counteract these disguised entities.
The senator also pointed out the risks posed by former POGO workers, with around 11,000 individuals awaiting deportation. He warned that these illegal aliens might engage in criminal activities like kidnapping, urging heightened alertness to prevent such incidents and ensure their swift deportation.
Additionally, Gatchalian praised the Office of the Solicitor General for their efforts in canceling fraudulently obtained birth certificates but urged them to accelerate their actions against foreigners posing as locals to curb their abusive activities in the country.
