Senator Urges Continued Crackdown on POGO Offshoots

·

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has urged for ongoing efforts to combat the remnants of Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs), following a significant operation in Bagac, Bataan that led to the rescue of 900 alleged POGO workers. The senator’s call comes in the wake of the December 31, 2024, deadline for POGO operations to cease, emphasizing the need to eradicate criminal syndicates linked to these entities.

Gatchalian highlighted the adaptability of POGOs, noting their transformation into various business fronts such as BPO companies, resorts, and restaurants to continue their illegal operations under the guise of legitimacy. He stressed the importance of vigilance from law enforcement, local governments, and the public to identify and dismantle these disguised operations.

The senator also pointed out the risks posed by former POGO workers, with around 11,000 individuals awaiting deportation. He warned of their potential involvement in criminal activities, including kidnapping, and called for immediate action to deport these illegal aliens to prevent further criminality.

Additionally, Gatchalian praised the Office of the Solicitor General for their efforts in canceling fraudulently obtained birth certificates but urged them to accelerate their actions against foreigners engaging in deceitful practices in the country.
