Philippine Team Dominates World Math Olympiad in China

In a stunning display of mathematical prowess, Team Philippines clinched the overall championship at the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) held in Shenzhen, China from January 3 to 6, 2025. The Filipino squad amassed an impressive haul of 10 gold, 10 silver, and 20 bronze medals, showcasing their dominance on the global stage. The Math Olympiads Training League Inc. (MOTLI) proudly announced the victory on social media, highlighting the stellar performances of Jenylle Nyka Lee, Carsten Edmund Ang, Allen Iver Barroga, and Ma. Cassandra Reich Duque. Barroga and Duque, both from Sarrat National High School in Ilocos Norte, were instrumental in the team’s success. Lee, representing Chiang Kai Shek College, and Ang from the Chinese International School in Metro Manila, also played crucial roles. MOTLI praised the achievement as a reflection of the Philippines’ commitment to nurturing mathematical talent. Notably, Duque, who won the senior secondary category, has been offered a full scholarship to the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, ranked 34th among Ivy League schools worldwide in 2024. The Duque family is currently deliberating on this prestigious offer. The WIMO 2024 saw participation from over 15 countries, with 67 Filipino representatives competing.
