MANILA – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has reassured the public that no recent data has been compromised in light of alleged cyberattacks by Chinese state-sponsored hackers targeting the executive branch. During a press briefing at the Palace, DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy emphasized the ongoing threat of cyberattacks but confirmed that previous attempts on government systems had been effectively blocked. Uy pointed out that the hackers were merely recycling old data to create a false impression of success. He stated, ‘So far, what we have seen is that no current information has been compromised. What we have seen are old data from many years ago that are being regurgitated, recycled just to make an impression that they were successful in doing so.’ The reported cyberattack, linked to Chinese hackers, was said to target the Office of the President with the intent to steal military documents concerning the South China Sea dispute, as part of an extended campaign. Uy highlighted that while critical government agencies remain vulnerable, the DICT has been vigilant in detecting and securing systems to prevent any sensitive data breaches.
