Quezon City Prolongs ‘Car-Free Sundays’ to Boost Health and Sustainability

·

Quezon City has decided to extend its ‘Car-Free, Carefree Sundays’ initiative, which was warmly received by residents. The program, which began on December 8, 2024, will continue to transform a section of Tomas Morato Avenue into a pedestrian-friendly zone on selected Sundays. This move, announced on January 6, 2025, aims to foster a healthier lifestyle and enhance the city’s commitment to sustainability.

Mayor Joy Belmonte stated that the initiative is a step towards realizing a vision of a sustainable and people-focused urban space. ‘Our goal is to promote outdoor activities, encourage healthy living, and uphold our environmental commitments,’ she explained.

The initiative, governed by Ordinance No. SP-3345, S-2024, closes the stretch from Timog Avenue to Roces Avenue, allowing joggers, cyclists, and pedestrians to enjoy the space freely. A rerouting plan is in place to manage traffic flow smoothly.

The program is rolled out in phases, with the first phase occurring on the first Sunday of each month from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. The second phase will see the initiative expand to more Sundays after a year.

Councilor Irene Belmonte, who spearheaded the ordinance, pointed out the wider advantages of the program, including increased safety in public spaces, promotion of active mobility, and a boost to local commerce.
