Philippine National Police Bolsters Security Ahead of 2025 Midterm Elections

·

In preparation for the upcoming 2025 midterm elections, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced an increase in security measures, effective from January 12. Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky, head of the Police Regional Office in Western Visayas, emphasized the implementation of more rigorous checkpoints and a strict enforcement of the gun ban during a press conference held on January 6, 2025.

Wanky highlighted that the police have already set up checkpoints across various stations to streamline election preparations. These checkpoints are designed to be mobile, ensuring they are less predictable and more effective in maintaining security. ‘We are ensuring that our checkpoints are dynamic, moving to different locations to avoid any patterns,’ Wanky stated.

Starting January 12, carrying firearms will be prohibited, and licensed gun owners have been reminded to comply with this regulation. Additionally, the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) has announced heightened security operations, especially significant as the election period overlaps with the Dinagyang Festival.

ICPO Director Col. Kim Legada stressed the importance of community cooperation in maintaining safety and creating a secure environment for both residents and visitors during this crucial time. Authorities are calling on the public to assist in ensuring compliance with the new security measures and to help uphold peace and order throughout the election period.
