Leonel Waste Management Corporation has firmly rejected accusations from the Manila city government that it neglected its garbage collection responsibilities during the holiday season. The company insists that it continued its services until the end of its contract on December 31, 2024, despite the city owing them over PHP561 million. In a statement released on Monday, Leonel emphasized that the allegations unfairly discredit the dedication of their garbage collectors. The firm highlighted that on December 23, 2024, they informed their employees of the contract’s impending end but instructed them to maintain regular services, especially in light of the increased waste during the holidays. Leonel also noted a meeting with Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna in September 2024, where they announced their decision not to bid for the 2025 contract due to the city’s growing unpaid debts, aiming to facilitate a smooth transition for the incoming service provider. Leonel stressed their commitment to their clients and their duty, stating they have served diligently until the contract’s end, supported by timestamped photos and Barangay Certifications. Meanwhile, Mayor Lacuna claimed on Sunday that Leonel had abandoned its duties during a time when waste volumes surged by 400 percent over the Christmas and New Year period.
