The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has issued a stern reminder to local government units (LGUs) to rigorously implement Republic Act No. 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, as uncollected garbage continues to accumulate in Metro Manila post-New Year celebrations. The DENR stressed the critical role of effective waste management in protecting public health and the environment. According to the DENR, RA 9003 requires LGUs to develop, execute, and enforce solid waste management plans that have been sanctioned by the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC). Despite 89% of LGUs across the nation, including all 17 in Metro Manila, having their plans approved, the DENR is pushing for more vigorous action from local officials. The department has also committed to offering technical support to LGUs facing challenges in implementation. The persistent issue of improper waste disposal in the Philippines has led to environmental degradation, health risks, and exacerbated urban flooding. Over the recent holiday period, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna publicly criticized the city’s waste management contractor for failing to fulfill its duties, a claim the contractor refuted, pointing to the expiration of their contract on December 31, 2024.
