DOJ Warns Foreign POGO Workers: Leave Philippines or Face Legal Action

·

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued a stern warning to foreign workers in the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) sector, stating that they must leave the country or face severe legal repercussions. This comes after a nationwide ban on POGOs was enforced on December 31, 2024. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla reiterated the government’s unwavering position against POGOs, following a report from the Bureau of Immigration (BI) that approximately 11,000 foreign POGO workers are still present in the Philippines, despite a presidential order for their departure by the end of 2024. These workers include those who did not voluntarily downgrade their visas or exit the country last year, as well as those who downgraded their visas but missed the deadline. In response, the BI has intensified efforts to locate and deport these individuals. Secretary Remulla emphasized the administration’s commitment to supporting the welfare of Filipinos and vowed to continue aggressive operations against non-compliant POGOs. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. had previously announced a total ban on POGOs during his third State of the Nation Address in July of the previous year, citing the industry’s association with grave crimes such as human trafficking, prostitution, kidnapping, and murder.
