MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) reported a significant 27.6% increase in firework-related injuries this holiday season, totaling 771 cases. The data, collected between December 22, 2024, and January 2, 2025, showed that the majority of these incidents were linked to the use of kwitis (rockets), 5-star firecrackers, and boga (improvised cannons). A notable number of victims suffered from severe skin burns, some of which led to amputations. Additionally, the DOH reported the first stray bullet death of the season, involving a 19-year-old from Davao del Norte who was killed by a bullet during holiday festivities near his residence. Out of the total injuries, 39 were reported on New Year’s Eve, with an additional nine cases on January 2, predominantly affecting minors. In response, the DOH has once again urged the public to avoid using both illegal and legal fireworks. The agency also raised concerns about road safety, noting 638 traffic accidents since December 22, resulting in seven deaths. Among these accidents, 117 drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol, and 553 individuals were not wearing safety gear. Motorcycles were involved in 452 of these incidents, marking a 30% rise in road accidents compared to the previous year.
