MANILA – Senator Loren Legarda has issued a strong call for immediate and coordinated action to tackle the triple planetary crisis, which includes climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, severely impacting the Philippines. In a recent statement, Legarda emphasized that this crisis is not a looming threat but a current reality with significant consequences for the nation’s daily life and future.
As a prominent figure in global environmental advocacy, serving as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Global Champion for Resilience and Ambassador for Parliaments of the Climate Vulnerable Forum, Legarda has consistently highlighted the interconnected nature of these environmental challenges. She pointed out the dire situation in the Philippines, where each citizen consumes about 20 kilograms of plastic yearly, with 15.4 kilograms turning into waste. This has positioned the Philippines as the leading contributor to ocean plastic pollution, responsible for 36 percent of the global total.
The senator also drew attention to the country’s struggles with waste management, noting that over 253,000 tons of hazardous waste were generated in 2022. In Metro Manila, more than 80 percent of wastewater is discharged untreated, posing serious health and environmental risks. Additionally, air quality issues were highlighted, with the Philippines ranking 79th out of 134 countries in 2023.
Legarda warned that the effects of these environmental issues are evident nationwide, from severe typhoons and flooding in urban areas to extended droughts in rural regions. She stressed the importance of preserving the Philippines’ biodiversity, which is crucial as the country hosts a significant portion of the world’s species and flora.
Calling for a comprehensive societal response, Legarda advocated for enhanced collaboration between government, businesses, and communities. She encouraged Filipinos to actively participate in environmental protection efforts for the sake of future generations. While acknowledging existing environmental legislation, she pushed for stronger policies to boost climate resilience and sustainability.
As the new year approaches, Legarda urged a collective commitment to turning 2025 into a pivotal year for addressing the triple planetary crisis, emphasizing the potential for significant positive change.
